Product Description

In the face of real fears, theory is not enough. When terrible things happen, can you really believe that God is in control, that God is love? In Nothing Else to Fear, Ellis uses Scripture and candid accounts of his own experiences in Indonesia to prove that God can be trusted.

He doesn’t offer a way to make your problems disappear. Instead, this humbling and awe-inspiring book will change the way you look at the world and your relationship with God.

I read this book twice and highly recommend it.
The title comes from a hymn 'Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear'. David Ellis looks back on twenty years as a missionary in Indonesia and brings out valuable lessons from his experiences. The second half of the book is an exposition of Psalm 2 in which he takes the reader to the heart of the gospel and the deep meaning of Christ's sacrifice for us and his coming return as King.

Great Stuff!
This book is great stuff! David Ellis, who worked with OMF in Indonesia and across East Asia for decades, has done us all a favour. 158 pages of biblical and warm teaching. In some ways this book is difficult to classify as there are so many aspects to it. The 13 short chapters range from dangerous missionary stories to exposition and to a very helpful discussion of Islam and Western culture. It does not fit neatly into any genre. David Ellis recounts his time in Indonesia telling of incidents where he and his family were in physical danger, but, more importantly, he teaches us with great biblical wisdom how he dealt with those fears and dangers. Other helpful chapters deal with providence and suffering and there's also a stirring exposition of Psalm 2. Some chapters did not follow one another., At times it felt like a collection of missionary letters, but this is a small quibble. This plea for wholehearted, sensible, sacrificial Christian living did me the world of good and would do the same for you. I echo the words of Ajith Fernando who wrote on the inside cover: 'I nee to read books like this regularly to help maintain my spiritual glow'. Buy and read!!

Somebody once said that a good Christian biography is a Bible commentary of a three-dimensional kind: we see the faithfulness of God to his promises expounded chapter by chapter through the lives and circumstances of his people. This is certainly the case with Nothing Else to Fear by David Ellis. The book is not a conventional chronological sweep through its author’s life, but a collection of reflections on what it means to live under the loving care of a sovereign God.

A great read to savour over Easter
Faced with Muslim riots, political upheaval, personal tragedy and physical hardship, one is unable to hold fast to God without a robust understanding of God’s sovereign control of all the earth. David Ellis weaves together anecdote with biblical meditation, allowing the truths of scripture (especially the pivotal Psalm 2) to form the lens through which the world, in all its frightening chaos, is viewed. The book’s title and central theme takes its cue from a hymn based on Psalm 34: “Fear him, ye saints; and you will then Have nothing else to fear: Make you his service your delight, Your wants shall be his care.” This is a book that offers scriptural reflection rather than trite answers, and yet manages to do so in a way that is readable, warm and greatly encouraging. A great read to savour over Easter (nice short chapters!), and one for Christians of all ages and stages.
