Outreach to Vietnamese wives - and their families

17/02/2009 9:00 am  <>

A week before Chinese New Year, a new gospel center was opened in Taiping, Taichung County. This gospel center is targeting working class families in the area. Many of the Taiwanese men we are working with have foreign brides, mostly from Vietnam. Around 50 people came out for this celebration which included 10 working class couples along with an additional 15/20 foreign brides without their husbands. The Branch and McCracken families have been working in conjunction with workers from Tanzi, Gethsemane Church for the last few years in Taiping. We moved from out old center two doors down. The new place is a lot cleaner and more usable. Gethsemane Church is graciously providing the funding for the rent. Please pray for the following ministries that are currently going on during the week:

  • Thursday Night Tea Night: Targeting Taiwanese men lead by Tim McCracken, in which he leads a small bible discussion and prayer.
  • Friday & Saturday Night: Free classes, taught by a local Taiwanese worker, Mia, for foreign spouses learning Chinese. This ministry is one of the key doors/bridges into the community.
  • Sunday: Holly and I along with the McCrackens lead a couples group made up of Taiwanese working class men and their foreign spouses.
  • During the week: Various follow-up with converts, touching base with families we know and making new contacts.

One such couple is the Zhang Family. He is a Taiwanese working class gentleman with a Vietnamese wife and a small child. We met this family while his wife came to Chinese class when she first arrived to Taiwan. They have continued to come around, even after her she stopped coming to class. Mr. Zhang has come to the tea night and they both have come to the Sunday couples group. After one couples group he invited us workers to his house for tea. Before leaving he allowed us to pray for him and his family. When asked if he would like to become a Christian, he replied, “it takes time”. May God, on his time, continue to do a great work in Mr. Zhang’s heart.

Continue to pray that God will use the new gospel center to bring glory to his name along with providing a place to bring peace and salvation to the working class people of Taiping and beyond.
